The Inside Cabin Cruise: The Cheapest Way Onto the Ship

On almost every ship the lowest fare is for an inside cabin, with no window. An inside cabin cruise gives you the same dining, pools and entertainment as the guests in balcony cabins, for less.

Who an Inside Cabin Suits

  • Travellers who spend most of their time out of the cabin
  • Port-heavy itineraries where you are ashore every day
  • Light sleepers who like a dark room
  • Families booking several cabins
  • Anyone who would rather spend on excursions or dining

Getting the Best Inside Cabin

  • Location. Midship and lower decks feel less motion.
  • Above and below. Avoid cabins under the pool deck or above a nightclub.
  • Size. Inside cabins vary in size from ship to ship and even on the same ship.
  • Virtual windows. Some newer ships offer inside cabins with screens that show the view outside.
  • Guarantee cabins. A guarantee is often cheaper but the line chooses your cabin; you may even be upgraded.

Will I feel shut in?

Most people who try an inside cabin say they hardly notice, because they spend so little time there. If you are unsure, try one on a short cruise first, or choose an inside cabin on a ship with a large, airy public deck where you can spend your quiet time.

Making an Inside Cabin Feel Bigger

Unpack completely on the first day and slide the empty cases under the bed. Use the wardrobe, drawers and door hooks so surfaces stay clear, and bring a small battery night light, because an inside cabin is completely dark with the lights off — many people sleep better for it. Set an alarm, since no daylight will wake you. And plan to spend your quiet time in the ship’s lounges, library or open decks; the savings from an inside cabin are often best spent on an excursion or a special dinner rather than on extra square feet.
